Fun and Game (9)

March 29, 2006

Looks like my silly “Does your weblog own you?” quiz from 2002 is making the rounds again. The first time I took the quiz almost four years ago, the result said that my weblog owned 37.5% of me. I took it again a couple of days ago and still got the same score! And I thought my social life was improving. Apparently not.

By the way, I just can’t stop playing Farm Hustle. It’s so cute and so addictive! I’ve spent way too much time playing it these last couple of days it’s not even funny. I’m going to try to make myself to leave the computer and go out for a walk today. Wish me luck!

Kite Cam (2)

March 27, 2006

I think I know what I’m going to do this summer. I’m going to build this kite camera and fly and take aerial pictures with it every weekend. Well, maybe not every weekend. Some weekends will do. It’s going to be fun, fun, fun! But for now, I’m going to concentrate on making a pinhole camera to use on the Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, which is on April 30 this year.

I’m not a geek (though my husband might disagree). I’m just trying to find my niche in photography. That, and the fact that it is fun to experiment.

Another Weekend Report (0)

March 27, 2006

Bufflehead Ducks

So, another weekend has come and gone. Boohoo! We spent the weekend at Troy’s parents’ place. A weekend there usually means a game-playing weekend, but not this time.

On Saturday, Troy’s dad drove us down to the shore of Lake Erie so we could see and take pictures of the newly-built wind turbines. I’ve only seen a wind farm once before and it was in North Cape, Prince Edward Island. I thought it was a very large one with at least 16 turbines, but the one we saw this past Saturday is going to be even larger with 66 turbines. I took all the pictures of the turbines with a film camera so you’ll have to wait until I got the film developed before you can see them. Anyway, we stopped by a couple of antique stores on our way down, but sadly, there was no interesting cameras to be found. We also stopped by the Big Creek National Conservation Area to take pictures of some waterfowls.

Saturday night, I had to stay home alone with the dog and the cat because Troy had a bachelor party for one of his friends to go to (and no, he didn’t go to a strip bar with the rest of them — I’m so proud of him!) and Troy’s parents had to go to a buck and doe. I spent my time alone watching a couple of movies on TV and did a couple of crossword puzzles. The first movie was Beauty Shop, which I didn’t really care about, and the second one was Closer, which I enjoyed. The first time I saw Jude Law in the movie, I was like “Oooh, Jude Law, so dreamy!” but as the movie progressed, I learned to hate his character. Julia Roberts wasn’t very convincing as a photographer but damn, that Leica camera sure is sexy! If only it didn’t cost thousands of dollars

We didn’t really do much on Sunday though we did play some games of Super 5 (it’s strange how there’s no information about this game whatsoever online considering how fun it really is). And before we knew it, it was time to drive back up to Waterloo. We already have plans for next weekend. I can see it being quite eventful!

Forgetfulness (2)

March 24, 2006

Warmth in Coldness

For some reasons, I keep forgetting that Advil doesn’t work on an empty stomach. At least not in my case. I popped two this morning but it didn’t do anything so I spent hours feeling crappy. I kept telling myself to go grab a banana, but I was too stubborn to submit, mostly because I didn’t now why I should. I wasn’t really super hungry. About 10 minutes ago, I finally felt hungry enough to have something to eat so I had a banana and felt a little better almost instantly. Doh! Had I remembered, I would’ve had the stupid banana hours ago. Anyway, my body’s been hating me all week. I hope I won’t get sick for real. I hate being sick. But then again, who doesn’t.

In other news, I signed up and joined the CSS Reboot yesterday, meaning I have until May 1 to procrastinate come up with a new design for this site, meaning even if I did come up with a new design in a couple of days (which I doubt), it wouldn’t be up until May 1. Patience, grasshopper!

Capote and V (5)

March 21, 2006

We went to see Capote and V for Vendetta last weekend. Both movies are kind of disturbing and both show how human beings can be so manipulative.

I think the Oscar for Philip Seymour Hoffman was well-deserved. His acting was great. Though I wish he got an antagonistic role less often. Well, some people might think that his role as Capote was protagonistic, but he was an antagonist to me (you have to see the movie to understand). The movie was kind of slow at times and I did yawn a couple of times but it wasn’t so slow that you’d want to leave. It’s a so-slow-but-I-have-to-see-the-ending kind of movie.

We saw Capote at our local independent cinema here in Waterloo, but we saw V for Vendetta at one of those IMAX theatres with a screen as tall as a six-storey building, near Toronto (because the boys just had to see Natalie Portman BIG). Now I don’t think I could be happy with seeing a movie at any regular-sized screen cinemas anymore. Dammit. It was really that good. The IMAX technology, I mean (yea, Troy, I heard you: Canadian technology yadda, yadda, yadda). Well, the movie was also pretty good. I didn’t really mind the explosions. I just didn’t quite enjoy the blood-shed parts (even fake blood gives me shivers). I did, however, enjoy the storyline. Makes me want to read the graphic novel the movie was based on.

Did I say blogger’s block? Nah!

Long Time No Blog (3)

March 20, 2006

Beluga Whale

Well, it’s only been a week or so, but it’s still a long time. I guess. It’s just that I have been having blogger’s block all week. There’s only one way to break a blogger’s block: redesign! It’s been a long time coming, really. This design has been up for more than a year. I haven’t started with the redesign yet but I know it’s going to be simple. I might even do a live redesign. We’ll see tomorrow.

Anyway, I just thought I’d give you a head’s up. Later!

My Genius Husband (4)

March 13, 2006

Summer last year, Troy picked up a Canon Rebel XS camera with a broken shutter curtain from a garage sale for relatively cheap. The person who sold it to him said that it wouldn’t cost much to have it repaired. Liar. I asked around in some Canon photography forums and everyone said that buying a new camera would cost less than having it repaired. So the camera had to go into the closet and stayed there for an indefinite time. Until last night. Troy started fiddling with it and fixed the camera in, like, 10 seconds. Such a genius. I don’t know why he didn’t do it earlier, like 6 months ago, but at least he did it.

I’ve been playing around with the camera since. I’m so used to shooting with bulky, heavy SLR cameras that are older than myself that the Rebel XS feels as light as a feather in my hand. I’m also so used to shooting with all those old cameras in manual mode (since that’s the only mode available) that the first time I tried the AF mode, I was so impressed, I could pee my pants. Except I wasn’t wearing pants, but you get the point.

And since the said genius husband wants me to tell you all about the cameras we acquired this past weekend, I guess I just have to, or else. Well, we picked up two cameras from the popular Olympus XA series (XA1 and XA2) and two Praktica cameras (Praktica LTL, which is an SLR camera, and Praktica nOvex KAF, which is a point-and-shoot camera). The Olympus XA2 is the most costly of the bunch but we got it for less than what you’d have to pay for one on eBay so it’s all good.

I’d elaborate, but I’m tired, so off to bed I go!

Today’s Haiku (6)

March 09, 2006

Donald Forster Sculpture Park

Long time no haiku!

Rain falling all day
has melted the snow away.
I think Spring is near.

I got myself a new passport today. No, not a Canadian passport. An Indonesian one since my old one would expire in August this year. I thought it would take ages for me to receive my new passport, but in reality it only took less than a week. I mailed out everything (forms, documents, etc.) to the Indonesian Consulate in Toronto on Friday last week. They received the package two days ago, and today the new passport, along with the old, cancelled one, were sitting pretty in our mailbox. Yay! One worry out of the way. Though I like my old passport better. The new one — which is sporting a brand new design — looks kind of boring. But at least I don’t look like a Bombay bandit in my new passport photo.

In other news, I kind of miss watching people walk their cats. A girl from the next apartment building used to do that. It never failed to amuse me. But I haven’t seen her doing it in awhile. What a shame. Do you walk your cat?

Late for the Party (2)

March 09, 2006

So this year’s International Women’s Day was yesterday. Honestly, it makes me feel uncomfortable. I have no issues with the idea behind it. I just have issue with it being called the International Women’s Day. Why not call it the International Gender Equality Day instead? Calling it the International Women’s Day only makes women sound like sub-human. At least to me. And I find it kind of ironic. But maybe it’s just me.

Speaking of gender equality, while we were driving by the countryside last weekend, I couldn’t help but noticing that most family farms had “So-and-So and Sons” painted on the barns or the silos. None had “So-and-So and Daughters” or “So-and-So and Sons and Daughters”. I used to think that maybe it was because the farmers had no daughters, but now that I think of it, it can’t be true. So I started ranting to Troy about how daughters, given the same opportunity, would be able to run the farms just as well as the sons could. Farming takes skills and skills can be learned by anyone, regardless of their gender.

The only excuse Troy could offer that kind of makes sense to me was that those “So-and-So and Sons” signs have been around for ages, before there was such thing as gender equality. But still, some of those signs still look pretty freshly painted to me…

And then I started telling Troy that I really should start a new weblog about my various issues and that my first entry should be all about my issue with procrastination so that when I stopped updating the weblog after the first entry, the readers would know exactly why.

Orange Roughy (6)

March 07, 2006

When we went grocery shopping last night, I picked up a fish fillet to be made into some Indonesian fish cake called Pempek. The fillet came from some white meat fish called the orange roughy. I’d never heard of the fish before but I thought as long the meat was white, I should be able to handle it (I don’t like to eat red meat fish).

The Pempek I had today for lunch turns out to be the best Pempek I’ve ever made. I’ve tried to make it about half a dozen times before, but usually met with failure. To celebrate my success, I decided to do a little research on the orange roughy.

Orange roughy — also goes by the exotic name of slimehead — turns out to be an ugly, deep-sea creature. It can live up to 149 years but only grows to about 61cm (2 feet) in length. That means the fish I was eating could be older than me! How cool is that? Well, maybe not so cool to you, but it’s pretty cool to me since I don’t get to eat meat coming from an animal that’s older than me every day that even the prospect of it kind of excites me.

If the facts about the orange roughy don’t really impress you, this Japanese video that shows you how to peel cooked potato skin in one shot should (link stolen from SMooSH). I still have yet to try the trick out.
